A carefully named audience does not guarantee that your ads reach the right buyer.

For B2B campaigns, the important questions are simpler: what does this audience represent, is it available in this campaign type, and does the setting restrict delivery or merely guide the system?

Here is the practical version I would use before adding another layer of targeting.

## Start with the campaign type

Search captures a query in the moment. Other formats can reach people using inferred interests, prior interactions, and other signals. The same audience option is not available everywhere.

Check Google’s [audience segment availability table](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2497941) before planning a setup. Custom segments, for example, are not a standard Search audience targeting option. Demand Gen lookalike segments are a separate feature, not a reason to revive an old Similar Audiences tutorial.

An audience category is also not a verified list of decision-makers. “In-market” does not mean every member has an approved budget or a current buying project.

## Targeting and Observation answer different questions

For a conventional Search audience setup, Targeting restricts eligibility to the selected audience alongside the other campaign criteria. Observation adds audience reporting without narrowing reach.

Google’s [Targeting and Observation guide](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7365594) also notes that first-party segments under Observation can inform Smart Bidding.

I would usually begin with Observation when the aim is to understand audience performance on existing Search demand. Switching to Targeting needs a commercial reason, such as a deliberately restricted re-engagement campaign. It is not a mandatory next step after collecting data.

A promising audience report may reflect other differences in the traffic. It does not prove that restricting the campaign will improve results.

## Custom URLs do not give you a competitor’s visitor list

In supported campaigns, custom segments can use keywords, URLs, and apps as inputs.

Google describes URL inputs as a way to reach people who browse websites similar to those entered. They do not let you select everyone who visited a particular competitor page, and they do not place your ads on that URL. See the [custom segments documentation](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9805516).

For a fictional accounting product, adding a review-directory URL is an audience hypothesis. It is not a list of accountants currently comparing vendors.

The interpretation of search-term inputs also depends on where the campaign runs. Check the available option and its description rather than assuming every keyword input means an exact search-history match.

## Performance Max signals are suggestions

An audience signal in Performance Max is not a hard boundary around delivery. Google may reach people outside the supplied audience. Its [Performance Max guidance](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14587068) makes that distinction explicit.

If you need a campaign restricted to a defined group, do not assume a signal has achieved it. Review the actual campaign controls and reporting.

Likewise, check expansion and automation settings in other campaign types before describing any audience as exclusive.

## Use first-party data with a clear purpose

Your own website, app, and customer interactions can support eligible audience uses. Customer Match needs appropriately collected data, policy compliance, account eligibility, and enough matched users to serve.

A small B2B list may not be usable even when it represents valuable accounts. Match rates, consent, and serving thresholds matter. Verify current requirements in the account; do not copy a single minimum size across every network.

Do not upload purchased or scraped contact lists and assume a work email address makes them suitable.

For re-engagement, distinguish prospects from existing customers where the data and campaign controls support it. Refresh the logic as people progress, but do not promise a perfectly ordered funnel that every buyer must follow.

## Do not treat audience bid adjustments as universal controls

Manual audience bid adjustments are not a general way to steer Smart Bidding. Google’s [bid adjustment documentation](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2732132) lists support and strategy-specific exceptions.

Review the bidding strategy before prescribing a percentage adjustment. A setting that works in one setup can be unsupported in another.

## Judge the setup by lead quality

A restrained starting plan for a B2B Search campaign is:

- Choose commercially relevant search intent and a matching offer.
- Add useful eligible audience observations.
- Keep conversion measurement focused on meaningful outcomes.
- Review search terms and accepted-lead feedback.
- Test a restriction only when it solves a defined problem.

Do not exclude “Unknown” demographics just because the label feels untidy. Nor should you assume those users are all privacy-conscious technical buyers.

The aim is better decisions about spend, not the most elaborate audience diagram.
